How to increase your Facebook reach… for free.
We all know that when you post an update to Facebook only about 1, maybe 2, percent of your fans actually see it.
Unless you pay for it…
…but earlier this week I discovered something pretty interesting about Facebook reach.
There’s actually a way to increase your reach without paying for it.
Of course, it still doesn’t compare to spending money to promote the post, but it definitely helps.
What happened earlier this week?
Derek Haplern of the famous Social Triggers (46k “Likes”) ran a Facebook experiment to try and figure out the best way to increase organic reach.
He posted three statuses:
- This is important. If you see this, LIKE this update. Here’s why:
- This is important. If you see this, SHARE this update. Here’s why:
- This is important. If you see this, leave a comment. Here’s why:
Basically, he wanted to see which of the three — like, comment, or share — yielded the best reach.
Here’s what happened:
- The “LIKE” update reached 6,280 (538+ likes, 20+ comments, and 2 shares).
- The “SHARE” update reached 8,408 people (24 likes, 20+ comments, and 151 shares).
- The “COMMENT” update reached 16,256 people (303+ likes, 471+ comments, 3 shares).
Unfortunately, we can’t take this data 100 percent because he posted these updates at different times of the day, but we can definitely take something from it.
What did we learn?
Many artists post updates asking their fans to “Like” the post. This is pointless because when you ask someone to “Like” something that’s all they’ll likely do. “Liking” is better than just posting and update with no call to action, which yielded results of less than 1,000 people reached.
You’d think “sharing” would be the best at reaching more people, but apparently it’s not. We’ve come to the conclusion that sharing is good for reaching people that may not know who you are. That’s never a bad thing, but if you’re looking to reach your own fans “sharing” is just as pointless as “linking”.
Last but obviously not least, commenting is the BEST strategy for increasing your page’s organic reach. Even better, it seems that people also “Like” something they’ve commented on. This means that you should always ask people to comment on your updates, i.e. asking them questions and getting them socially engaged.
So…!
If you want more reach, get your fans to leave you some comments!
With that being said, go ahead and leave me a comment and tell me what you think.
Share! Comparte! Condividi!
